The ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division will embark on the legendary Rockingham Speedway on Saturday July 4th 2009. The Cherry Bomb 200 will consist of a 100 lap ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division race, along with a 100 lap Frank Kimmel Street Stock Series event. ASA Late Model Series President, Ron Varney, is thrilled about the opportunity for “America’s Premier Short Track Series” to visit the legendary oval in the sand hills of North Carolina. “I cannot put into words how excited I am to land an event at such a historic place,” said Varney. Rockingham Speedway is full of stock car racing history, having held its first stock car race in October of 1965.
The ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division brings together some of the most talented short track drivers in the country. Drew Brannon is running for the championship in both the ASA Late Model Series South Division and ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division. The 16 year old from Miami, Florida is currently leading the standings in both divisions. Brannon will be joined by young drivers and veterans alike at the one mile high banked oval on July 4th. The field will be full of outstanding drivers with different racing backgrounds. The different grooves around Rockingham Speedway, along with an excellent tire compound should produce a great race.
Earlier this spring, Hoosier held a tire test at Rockingham. Veteran Midwest racers Butch Miller and Bob Varney were chosen to participate in the test. Both agreed that the tire compound Hoosier chose for the upcoming race would be a good match for the 2,700 pound stock cars. “It was an excellent, excellent tire,” stated Butch Miller. “I am used to going to Rockingham with Goodyear’s in a Cup or Nationwide car and the very first lap you make out there is the fastest lap you run. With the Hoosier’s, they never dropped off.” Miller continued to say that the tires showed very little wear.
As far as the quality of racing at Rockingham Speedway for the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division, Miller believes there will be 100 laps of side by side racing, “I think we will see some great racing.” Bob Varney, who also participated in the tire test with Miller was astonished with the racing grooves at Rockingham, “There is grip all the way up to the wall at Rockingham,” exclaimed Varney, “I was up in the third groove and the car stuck.” Both Miller and Varney agree that the compound Hoosier has chosen for the Cherry Bomb 200 will produce side by side racing without slowing down over a long green run.
Be sure to come out to Rockingham Speedway on July 4th for 200 laps of side by side racing. Tickets are only $10.00 for adults and children 12 and under are admitted free with each adult ticket purchased. ASALMS – Lexington, MI – June 23, 2009
The ASA Late Model Series is gearing up for what is surely one of their biggest races so far in 2009, the “Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200” at Rockingham Speedway.
When you think of “The Rock” you remember names like, Pearson, Waltrip, Allison, Yarborough and Petty. Gone are the days of NASCAR and their stars, but new owner Andy Hillenburg is trying to keep the dream alive and help create new names to be a part of the Rockingham history.
On July 3rd and 4th for the first time in a long time, straight rail, offset late models will race at “The Rock”. Over 30 of the best late model drivers will compete in the first, of what we hope is many, “Cheerwine Cherry Bomb 200’s”.
“This will be a true test for our drivers; you have so much going on all at the same time, speed, the draft and the track itself. Rockingham is hard on tires but Hoosier has developed an awesome tire that will hold up for 50-60 laps, it’s almost too good” stated Series President Ron Varney.
“I expect this to be a highly competitive field of cars; we have current NASCAR Nationwide drivers Stephen Leicht and Scott Lagasse along with former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year Willie Allen already signed up. Plus current ASA Late Model Series stars Drew Brannon, Brian Blum and Brandon Johnson.
Also on tap for the race weekend are the Frank Kimmel Street Stock Series, schedule for 100 laps. Tickets for the Cherry Bomb 200 are available at the speedway ticket office. For More information or to order tickets, please contact the speedway at (910) 205-8800 or visit us online at www.rockinghamspeedway.com

WEST SALEM, WI — The ‘King of the Short Tracks’ has struck again.
Hometown favorite Steve Carlson moved quickly through the field and left little doubt Saturday night, leading 81 laps and winning the first ever River Run 100 at the LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. It was Carlson’s second straight win with the ASA Late Model Series North Division at La Crosse, including his triumph last October in the season ending 100 lapper.
Minnesota’s Trent Snyder led the field to the Green Flag, with Ross Kenseth along side on the front row. Snyder pounced to the early lead, with Kenseth falling into second. Iowa driver Griffin McGrath would challenge Kenseth for the runner up spot on the second lap, and get together with the Rookie of the Year contender on lap 4. Due to initiating the contact, McGrath was sent to the tail, while Kenseth got his spot back in the runner up position.
On the restart, Snyder would pull away from the pack again; with defending series champion Eddie Hoffman filling up the youngster Kenseth’s mirror. The two would toil for second for five laps, before the ominous presence of Carlson’s blue #66 filled both Hoffman and Kenseth’s mirrors. Carlson would dispose of Hoffman on lap 10 and Kenseth on lap 13. It would take the Wisconsin racing veteran only six more laps to track down Snyder and take the lead.
After Carlson jumped to the front of the pack, he would sail away from the rest of the field. In the process, during a long, 84 lap green flag run, Carlson would lap all the way through the sixth spot. Carlson’s quest was finally halted though on lap 88, when local hot shoe J Herbst would spin in turn 3 and bring out the third yellow of the race.
The yellow period would put Kenseth on Carlson’s bumper, but Kenseth would spin his tires on the start, and Carlson would pull away. Series point’s leader Chris Eggleston would seize the opportunity to battle with Kenseth for second. But as that battle heated up, the final yellow of the race flew on lap 94 for Jordan Sims, who backed his back hard into the turn 4 wall.
The final restart would see much of the same, with Carlson cruising away from the field, and Kenseth holding off Eggleston for the runner up spot. Snyder would finish fourth, his best showing since a third place run in the ASALMS North opener in Toledo, with Hoffman scoring a fifth place finish.
Carlson said in victory lane, “We’ve only raced this car about 15 times and its won every race but two. It’s the most awesome car I’ve ever driven. I got an awesome crew; they work on the car so hard. It’s REALLY a good car.”
But even with a knowledge of the track and the superior car, Carlson confessed that the ride was by no means perfect around the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. “The car was sliding around some, but you just gotta hang onto it and don’t hurt anything, the tires and things like that,’ the winner stated and also added, “It was a fun night, the car was good and it’s fun to win here at home in front of all these fans.”
Kenseth was asked if it’s at all a disappointment to finish second to Carlson at LaCrosse.
“Not really,’ stated the 16 year old, ‘I mean, his car was awesome and he’s obviously a great driver and has been racing here for a long time…we’re happy with second place.”
The third-generation racer from Spring Valley, Illinois has had quite a few great runs at La Crosse early in his career, setting fast time two years ago and winning last year’s Oktoberfest feature, both with the Big 8 Series Late Model Series, where Kenseth was Rookie of the Year last year. When asked what he loves about the track Kenseth stated, ‘The track is a track you can pass on, which is really cool. And (my crew) has just given me such a great car each time out it just makes it real easy for me.”

“La Crosse is such great venues for us; a lot of our drivers are from Wisconsin and enjoy running there. The fans are just great and we have packed the stands during the last couple of Oktoberfest races, we expect to have a great crowd for the “River Run 100” commented Series owner Ron Varney.
Entered to compete are local favorites J. Herbst and the always tough Steve Carlson. Carlson had his hands full last year during fest with a young and upcoming Brett Moffitt, just when it looked like the young Moffitt might pull the upset with a late race pass, the wily veteran Carlson said not so fast and retook the lead for good.
“The way that race finished with Carlson and Moffitt battling hard until the last lap left fans with something to cheer about, it was a rough race with several yellows and the fans were a little upset about that, but when everyone finally settled down and decided to race it sure was a good race” stated Varney.
